Hey all you Beer Friends out there! Let’s see what’s happening beer wise in this great metropolis of ours throughout this upcoming week.
Monday, October 11 – Troeg’s Tasting Event @ Amity Hall, Manhattan: Amity Hall is the place you go to when your nosing around Washington Square Park with your friends that are visiting the city and wanted to see Washington Square Park and then want beer. You know it’s there, you might not head to an NYU neighborhood regularly, but today you know that you will not take your friends to a light beer bar on Bleecker, but you will take them to a good craft beer bar on West 3rd. If all this happens to be happening tonight, Monday, October 11, then you will be in for a treat: Troeg’s Tasting Event. Troeg’s is a fantastic brewery from outside of Philadelphia. So after your friends have taken their respective pictures in front of the newly aligned fountain in Washington Square, bring them to Amity Hall, head upstairs and drink Troeg’s. They’ll thank you for saving them from tourist dogma.
Tuesday, October 12 – I Love NY Beer Week: Captain Lawrence Night @ The Spring Lounge, Manhattan: The Spring Lounge is a great beer bar that borders the entrance to Little Italy, a.k.a. many New Yorkers Tourist Nightmare (seems to be a theme today actually). However, you are not in Little Italy, nobody is throwing pasta at you and I promise you only have to choose 3 different flavors of gelato if you want to. The Spring Lounge is spending the week appreciating New York Breweries, from all over the state, starting with Captain Lawrence out of Kingston, NY. Come on by and grab some Westchester Pale Ale, Brown Bird Brown and Liquid Gold. And if you want, you can head over to Little Italy and get some gelato on your way out. You can even choose 3 flavors for the same price. If you want to.
Wednesday, October 13 – Octoberfest Event @ Standings, Manhattan: Do you like sports? (YES!) Do you like bratwurst? (YES!) Do you like American styled Octoberfest beer? (YEEEESSSSSS!). Well, then you should come down to Standings for their Octoberfest celebration on Wednesday. One of the best craft beer/sports bars in the East Village will be celebrating Octoberfest by featuring 3-5 draughts of American style Octoberfest brews and serving up Bratwursts…for free. In fact, out of sports, bratwursts and beer…2 out of 3 are free. That’s an Craft Beer Divisional Series win for free stuff.
Wednesday, October 13 – Lagunitas Night @ Amity Hall, Manhattan: Amity Hall is poppin up again in this week’s beer events with a night dedicated to Lagunitas Brewery out of Petaluma, Cali, Cali. Lagunitas, to me at least, is a hidden gem. Their IPA is popular to the masses, even here in NYC, but with Lagunitas you really have to dig deep to find some truly exceptional beers such as Uncensored, the Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’, Brown Sugga, Hop Stoopid and Maximus IPA. Often overlooked, Lagunitas should never be underestimated. If you think have some re-estimating to do then head on over to Amity Hall and re-estimate the night away.
Thursday, October 14 – I Love NY Week: Brooklyn Brewery Event @ The Spring Lounge, Manhattan: Hey Brooklyn Brewery! Dare we say The Beer Friends favorite NY Brewery? Dare we might! They’ll be visiting the Spring Lounge this coming Thursday with a great selection of their most popular and rare pours. Garrett doesn’t expect you to head into Little Italy before/after this one, however we know that at this point the gelato desire is actually becoming unbearable. Here’s what we suggest: This years Black Chocolate Stout will premiere at this even, it is better than any gelato you will eat, ever. Have 3. And some Detonation. You can’t go wrong with this advice.
Thursday, October 14 – Southern Tier Night @ Dive 75, Manhattan: What we’re about to tell you might feel strange to the ears of anyone who lives south of 59th street: You need to get off your midtown/downtown ass and explore the beer bars of Uptown Manhattan! Dive 75 at Columbus and 75th street is a for-real beer bar. They will be featuring Southern Tier (the Beer Friends 2nd favorite NY brewerey?) this Thursday. Expect many favorites from the Rattle n’ Hum event to be reappearing here. And seriously, subways go uptown too. They don’t all terminate at 59th street. The beer flows just as good up there too!
Saturday, October 16 – I Love NY Beer Week: Southampton Brewery Night @ The Spring Lounge, Manhattan: One more time! And we promise not to make fun of Little Italy during this post. However, we do promise to instruct you to head to the Spring Lounge for at least one of these events. Really, it’s an east village dive bar with quite a bit of atmosphere right on the boundaries of one of the city’s most famous neighborhoods. You can’t get more perfect than this. Head to the back room with a pint and a friend, or two, get a seat by the open air windows and enjoy a crisp fall evening with a Southampton Altbier, Double White or IPA. Seriously, there’s a playground across the street where little village munchkins who will grow up having that NYC lifestyle ingrained in their bones play their NYC hearts out. What more of an NYC scene could you ask for? Especially while drinking beer from inside of a dimly lit dive bar?
